Doon Hill in the Trossachs will always be associated with the Reverend Robert Kirk. He was the author of ‘The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies’ , a book on the nature and social structure of fairies. Apparently he wrote from personal experience!
On the 14th of May 1692 he set off for his daily stroll from Aberfoyle and collapsed and died at the top of nearby Doon Hill. Tradition has it that he did not really die but had fallen into a swoon and had been taken into the realms of the fairies. The hill became known as Fairie Knowe
The tree in the middle of the clearing at the top is called the ‘Minister’s Pine’ and is said to house Robert Kirk's spirit.
